Text
The British Government decided to build an atomic power station in the village of Helmby, in the north of England. When it is finished, it will be the one of the largest one in Europe. Dave, a school teacher and Christine, a factory worker discussed this project. Ian Keys, a journalist, interviewed then in a local pub.
IAN: What do you think of the plan to build the atomic power station here?
CHRISTINE: Well…I think it is an excellent idea. I mean it has to be built somewhere. Everybody knows we need atomic power.
DAVE: I…I don’t agree at all, it will ruin the village. And in my case, I don’t think it’s necessary. In fact, I think unnecessary and unsafe.
CHRISTINE: What do you mean it’s unnecessary? Everybody knows we can’t go on using oil much longer. In 20 or 30 years. …Perhaps sooner …there won’t be any. And look at what it coast already.
DAVE: Well. …First of all, that simply isn’t true. I mean nobody knows how much oil is left. But even if it runs out in 20 or 30 years, there will be alternative sources of energy.
CHRISTINE: What do you mean? How do you think we are going to heat our homes and light them and run our factories when the oil runs out? What do you think we’re going to use then? Old socks? Because that will be the only …What you call it…alternative source of energy there be!
DAVE: I’m sorry but that’s nonsense. Just nonsense! Think of all that coal down there in the mines and you see, nowadays, we can get energy from the sun; in the few years we’ll be able to use the mind. …
