Text : MORAINGY

SIRAMA stands for SIRAMAMY MALAGASY which is the name of the Malagasy National sugar company in Ambilobe. On the days off, SIRAMA workers sometimes go to neighboring villages to watch a moraingy match (a special Malagasy game), to Ampondralava for example which is on an easy road ten minutes away. Its young team is practically unbeatable; sometimes it is challenged by a team from Antsiranana, about 200 kilornetres away. The spectators from a circle in a village square and the young people take up their positions against the other side with raised fists. The struggle does not last long. Each team member has to down his opponent using only his arms and legs and very rarely his fists. However, it is easy to get hurt. The quick round involves some very tough blows and victory lies with the team gaining most points for individual fights.

Moraingy is the favorite local sport, and the art is supposed to be handed on from generation to the next within the close circle of local families. It is more than a pastime; and it is one of the prides of the Antakarana people.
