TEXT: Water and Soil
All living beings must eat and drink. For this reason, two things have always had to be studied very carefully everywhere in the world where people live. One of these things is water. The other is the soil where food is grown in.
Plants must drink, too, and systems of irrigation have existed right from the early times in our history. In modern times, in places like the valley of the Nile of the River Volta, irrigation systems are being constructed now to make the work of the farmers much more efficient and much less likely to be spoilt by drought than it used to be. All over the world water is being used more efficiently than ever.
Nowadays, farmers are helped in their work by experts. All these experts have been trained in agricultural colleges or at special centres. Some of them study the problems of erosion. In some parts of Africa, the heavy rain which falls in the rainy seasons carries the good soil away from the fields where it is not needed and only leaves stones and poor soil on which can grow very few crops. When the soil is carried away from the fields, we say that erosion is happening in them and that it must be prevented.
