TEXT: Public Enemy Number One 

The world’s biggest killer, the greatest cause of ill-health and suffering across the globe, is listed almost at the end of the International Classification of diseases, the giant tome which records all ailments know to medical science. It’s given the code Z 59.5. It doesn’t stand for cancer, heart disease. HIV or even malnutrition. It stands for extreme poverty. Poverty is the main reason why babies are not vaccinated, why clean water and sanitation aren’t provided, why treatment is unavailable and why mothers die in childbirth. It’s the underlying cause of reduced life expectancy, handicap, disability and starvation. It’s a major contributor to mental illness, stress, suicide, family disintegration and substance abuse.
